Mobistar presents its latest innovation, a European première: continuous mobile communication between Mobistar network & Orange Luxembourg when crossing the border

Back to news index

Mobistar and Orange Luxembourg today are launching an innovation on their network allowing all of their customers travelling back and forth between Belgium and Luxembourg to cross the border and keep and excellent voice call conversation when crossing the border. A very handy service for commuters and travellers who will see their mobile voice calling comfort improve significantly. Moreover, Mobistar and Orange Luxembourg are the first operators in Europe to offer this feature to their customers.

Normally, mobile phone calls are interrupted when crossing a border because the mobile loses its connection with the network of origin. Customers need to wait until their phone connects again, this time to a local network before being able to make a call again. Thanks to a new technical functionality and cross border optimization on the Mobistar and Orange Luxembourg networks, the switch of mobile operator between Belgium and Luxembourg will take place during the call without interrupting the conversation. This feature works in both ways: Belgium-Luxembourg and Luxembourg-Belgium.

The cost of the phone call will remain the same as in the country where the call started, for the entire call. For instance, a call by a Mobistar customer that originated in Belgium while travelling to Luxembourg will be considered a domestic call during the entire conversation. In this case for customers who have a subscription with unlimited calls, these conversations are included in their bundle and generate no additional costs.

So this innovation is very attractive for commuters because they avoid roaming costs as they pass the border while calling with their mobile. If a call is initiated in Luxembourg however and the Belgian customer passes the border with Belgium, the roaming tariff will continue.

Mobistar identified 60.000 customers who will benefit from this service on a regular basis, and is studying other countries where it may roll out this innovative technology as well.
